Joseph Dowdesbury born 1811 Standish Gloucestershire, he married Harriot Townsend born 1812 Frocester, Gloucestershire in 1844.

Now the problem. On the 1851 census they appear to have several children but the 2 eldest were born in the 1830's, now was Harriot married before or did they live together for a few years.

Hannah Dowdeswell age 16
Peter Dowdeswell age 14
Moses Dowdeswell age 9
James Dowdeswell age 7
Ann Dowdeswell age 3
Charles Dowdeswell age 1 Month

Any help would be appreciated

Maybe he was married before.  Strictly speaking any children from a previous marriage of hers would have a different surname.  I realise they could all be put together under one surname on a census.

Really need their marriage certificate to see if either were widowed.

Could check births for the eldest two see what surname they are under  Idea
Eldest 3 probably as Moses born 1842.
Next one born 1844 so even that one may not be theirs.

Well there is a Moses birth entry under Dowdeswell Dec 1841 Stroud.

James Dowdeswell Mar 1844 Stroud.

I'm thinking he was married before not her otherwise they would be under Townsend but not found the eldest two yet.

I'm not even bright enough to find the family on the 1851 census, let alone find out who Joseph's first wife was!

Help!

I wonder why they never married till 1844 then? Pity the marriage isn't online to check their status  Cool

Struggling to find the elder two children in 1841. I can find a Peter Townsend 4 in Stroud with a Harriet Townsend 25.

Haven't found a marriage, but did find this poss baptism of Joseph in 1810.  Harescombe isn't far from Standish and both are the same distance from Stroud ...

To start at the beginning. Joseph Dowdesbury born 1766 Standish, married Hesther Pool in 1809. They had 2 sons Richard born 1811 (c) and Daniel born 1812 (c) In 1841 I have come across a Joseph and Hesther on the census that year with a son called Richard but born in 1816 not 1811.

So Joseph's first wife could well of been called Eliza.

There are 2 deaths for a Elizabeth Dowdeswell in 1842, one reg Tetbury the other Cirencester.

The only thin is where are the children in 1841?

I think the Joseph 30 with Eliza in 1841 is a different chap vron.
The Joseph we are looking at is the son age 30 below in 1841 and if he isn't with a wife and 2 young children in 1841 then they must be with their mother.
It's a pity the Peter and Harriet Townsend combo didn't have a Hannah with them.

I am also beginning to wander if there are two Joseph's born 1766 approx.

1 Joseph Dowdeswell born approx 1766 Standish, died in 1842 Standish, married to Hesther Pool in 1809.
They had 2 sons Richard born 1811 and Daniel born 1812 born in Driffield, Gloucestershire.

2 Joseph Dowdeswell born approx 1771 Standish, married to Esther approx 1781 Standish.
Children
Joseph Dowdeswell age 30
Richard Dowdeswell age 25
John Dowdeswell age 15
George Dowdeswell age 15
Caroline Dowdeswell age 20

Richard born 1811 was married by 1841 to Elizabeth Dean otherwise I would of thought they were the same family.

Think you are right siamese and there are two different families.

There are two Richards in 1841.  One age 68 Stroud on his own and the other we have listed above Standish age 25 with Caroline, Joseph etc.

Which one is this below or do we have a Richard the 3rd  Laughing

Richard born 1811 was married by 1841 to Elizabeth Dean otherwise I would of thought they were the same family.

There's a page and a half of family trees on ancestry for Joseph and Harriet.  I looked at the ones with the most info and none of them have a previous marriage for either of them.

Maybe they were parents for all the children but just didn't get round to a wedding in a timely fashion.

None had Hannah or Peter in 1841.  One had Harriet in 1841 Tetbury with a William Dowdeswell and she had an alternative name Harriet Cox.

No idea if this is the same Harriet or where those 2 children were in 1841 scratch

Maybe the 2 eldest children Hannah and Peter were a Townsend before their mother married then took their step father's surname.

But still the same problem, 3 Harriot Townsend on the 1841 census but not with a Hannah and Peter.

One of family trees has Harriet's father Zachariah mother Ann and there is a baptism for Harriet Townsend Frocester 6 Nov 1811.

That would indicate she hadn't been married before.
Moses too was born before she married Joseph. It is odd.

Aha I looked for Zachariah on the 1841 census and with him is - drum roll - Hanah Townsend 7 - that has to be her surely  cheers

So I think the other census with Harriet and Peter on must be the other two.

Children were born to Harriet but who the father of them was is up for debate.
