According to Ralph's marriage certificate (18 Feb 1867 in Horwich, Lancs to Nancy Hanson), his father was Ralph Kay a spindle maker; and according to later census records, Ralph jnr was b. in Wigan.

I've searched Ancestry, FMP and Lancs-opc but can't pin Ralph jnr down in 1851 or 1861, but my knowledge of Lancs geography is a bit minimal.

Consequently, I can't find any trace of Ralph snr either.

Options seem to  be:
1.  They're there, but I just can't see 'em.
2.  Ralph snr is a "typo" by the vicar and should say some other given name else entirely.
3.  Ralph snr is a figment of Ralph jnr's imagination and just there to save face.

Can anyone help, please?

Here's the link to the marriage cert if anyone want/can look

Had a look last night STG and couldn't find anything apart from the one with father Simeon which I'm sure you already found.

He wasn't a spindle maker nor called Ralph so maybe your Ralph did make up a father, hard to say but if pushed I would plump for option 3)

Think you're right, Tourmie.

Ah well, you can't win 'em all, eh? Sad
