Hey up

Uriah Hinchliffe was witness to the marriage of James & Sarah Hinchliffe in Nov 1816.

I've kind of looked for him before in case he was related but could never find a candidate old enough.

However I posted a question asking how old marriage witnesses had to be and apparently, whilst at the discretion of the minister, they could be as young as 12.

Can anyone find me a Uriah please (Huddersfield/Kirkburton/Cumberworth area) who would have been of age to witness this marriage?

There was one born 1806 but think he died.

Not much idea of the geography, but I found this chap

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N2WF-59N

and it's also on Ancestry

Edited to say:  Had a few minutes between exams this afternoon, so googled Uriah and found a link - that I now can't re-create at home  Sad - that had Uriah b. poss in Emsley or nearby, and d. Blackburn 1863.  FreeBMD has that death as Hinchcliffe.  He also features on several trees on Ancestry and someone has clipped what I think is an extract from Lancs OPC that has him as s/o William.  Does that fit with your Hinchcliffes?  Question

Edited again : The death in 1863 can't be the same Uriah who married in 1808 - because when he died he was only 68, which means b. 1795, and he'd have only been 13 when he got married.  Sozza Sad

Gosh thanks for all that STG.  I could never find one that was the right age.  Marrying in 1808 he would certainly be old enough to witness a marriage in 1816.

The death in 1863 can't be the same Uriah who married in 1808 - because when he died he was only 68, which means b. 1795, and he'd have only been 13 when he got married.

No but that's actually good if there was another one born 1795 maybe he was the witness.

As you probably know I don't know who my James was the son of or who his siblings were.  Have never managed to find a candidate I could be sure enough about.  However the best candidate was called William for his father and Martha for his mother but really not sure.

Will have a look more tomorrow thank you Smile

Found a few bits to work on.

Baptisms for children born to Uriah & Sophia Hinchliffe so we are looking for a marriage to a Sophia.

Fred 1852 father joiner
Allen 1856 father farmer
Maria 1857 father joiner

Can't see Uriah on a census yet but he should be if he was around till 1868.

Also found a private tree with Uriah born 1795 so have sent a message.

Hang on tho those baptisms are for children born in the 1850's so certainly Sophia can't have been born 1795ish unless she was super woman!
2nd marriage for U or perhaps this is a younger U hmmm work to do.

study

Rats the U married to Sophia was born 1829 so he can't be the witness either.
Marriage 1850 occupation joiner. Spouse Sophia Taylor.
No father shown for U so he wasn't even son of U Sad

He appears to marry again in 1862 to Jane Taylor but says he is still a bachelor.
Right age - no father - occupation joiner = naughty man.

Death for Sophia in 1862 (before he remarried) so why didn't he say he was a widower?

Anyway I should have been out shopping an hour ago so more later!

On FS I found baptisms for a Uriah/Mary couple :

Ann, bapt Cumberworth 22 Oct 1809
John, bapt Emley 31 Mar 1811
Eve, bapt Emley 28 Feb 1813
Tedber, bapt Emley 16 Apr 1815
Elizabeth, bapt Emley 6 Jul 1817

So the first one fits with a 1808 marriage, and then one every two years after that.  Think I saw somewhere (on Ancestry?) a birth year for Uriah of 1763, which would make him 45 when he married Mary, so maybe he also been married before (and we just haven't found it yet), or he was a late starter.

The link I found yesterday at work (that I still can't find again) seemed to suggest that the person who'd posted about Uriah was descended from Eve. Am there again on Monday, so will see if I can re-create it then.

Hope you get a reply from the Private tree.

Thanks so we come back to Uriah & Mary and he was alive in 1816.

Birth of 1763 though would be too old to be a brother of James even allowing for l o n g fertile periods.  James was born c1796.

Cumberworth is definitely the right area as James eldest 5 children were baptised there so that's a plus.

The tree owner has replied and said her U was a witness to marriage in 1854 between her ggg's Henry Haigh & Sarah Hinchliffe.
Sarah's father Jonadab Question but she has no proof U was a relative just as I have no proof he was a relative to mine.

Hmmm.

Jonadab that name is making me chuckle Laughing

Looked him up and guess what when he got married to Sarah Armitage one of the witnesses was U - this was 25 Dec 1815.

Guess it makes sense he would be a witness to his brothers marriages.

I don't know whether you know about this website.

I've found things on FS via DustyDocs that I couldn't find direct from FS, so might be worth a try  Basketball

Just had another thought - unlikely I know, but there it is! Shocked

How about checking the witness signature of the Uriah on the certificate you've got -v- the groom signature of the Uriah on the 1808 marriage certificate?

Then at least you'd have a better idea whether they were one and the same chap.

P'raps?  Basketball

Now that is a very good suggestion bounce

I should have him at least 4 times to compare.

1 - witness to James & Sarah
2 - witness to Beobab (aka Jonadab)
3 - witness to Beobab's daughter Sarah marriage
4 - U's own marriage

It's ringing a slight warning bell we actually have signatures for him as I don't think any of mine could sign their names.

Am going to look them up right now.

Well quite honestly I'm not sure one way or the other Laughing

On the plus side the surname is spelt the same Hinchliff with no e on the James one 1816.

On the Sarah one 1854 I can't see him as a witness at all! Looks more like John.

The best signature is on his own marriage 1808.

Maybe I should print them off as difficult to compare when you are looking them up one at a time.
