Got a chap in Soton who was a coach builder.

Now I've always associated that with railway coaches but last night someone suggested it could be horse and coaches and I wonder how I could find out which is more likely Question

Any ideas Idea

1901 census says "own account working at home" so that leads me to think he wasn't working for a railway or anything.

The name is Frederick A Caplan born 1849 Soton if any kind soul wants to have a look.
Son Frederick is a coach painter.

Thank you  Smile

Is Soton short for Southampton?

I must be doing something very wrong, because with/without a POB, I'm getting O for my searches ...  No

But, my problems aside, if he was in business, might he be in some trade directories?  I think coach could just mean bodywork, so trains, motor vehicles, fings wot get pulled by a norse, that kind of stuff.    bounce

Got the family in 1901 and other census years too now, thanks.

Have also checked for newspaper cuttings.  All I can find in the Southampton area is this from the deaths column:

13 Dec 1873, Hampshire Advertiser County Newspaper
On the 8th inst. at 36 Fanshawe Street, Southampton, of consumption, Alice Elizabeth Jane, only child of Frederick and Emma Caplen, aged 10 months and 1 week.

which I think is likely to be your Frederick.  I see from FreeBMD that his middle name was Albion - unusual, and that in Q4 1871 he married Elizabeth Emma Caines.  On the 1871 census he's at home with his parents (father a coach builder) in Lower Lyon Street, which is just around the corner from Fanshawe Street.

Hope this helps, even just a wee bit  Smile

Interesting, my Great Uncle x 2 was a Coachman and Spring Maker in Bristol, his son followed his father into the same occupation. Then in the 1900's he moved over to the motor building trade.
