Robert James Hinchliffe born Swindon Wilts 1853 ended up in Devonport and married and had children there.  He married Emma Jane Gilbert in 1875.

He died at 3 Morley Cottages Colebrook Devon in 1937, last night I found an unmarried daughter Esther Maud had the same address when she died in 1957.

I googled the address and came up with a Mr Hinchliffe company director.  I thought it would be a big coincidence if someone with the same family name and the same family address wasn't related somehow so that is the challenge!

I have gone back to his grandfather Reginald Duval Hinchliffe born 1909 but in Scarborough (although he married and died in Devon)
I don't have any links to Scarborough - that I know of.
Parents of Reginald on the 1911 are James & Annie.

Is this a random family who just happened to land at the same cottage or is there a link to Robert James - that is the Question

Any help and suggestions appreciated sunny

I've been mulling this over.

According to Sold House Prices on RightMove, the house hasn't been sold for about 30 years (since online records began, I think).

Perhaps Esther left the house - she left an estate worth over £900 - to some distant relative and it's still in the family,
or
she didn't own the house in the first place, some other relative did, and it's just been passed down.

I've found Esther there on the 1939 Register and the current inhabitant with his parents there/nearby.  I'll email you the details.

But I see that James is from Wakefield, which isn't a million miles from Huddersfield - where I think all the Hinchliffes in the whole world come from  Wink

Got the details thanks for sending STG Very Happy

I've gone back several generations from James and Huddersfield did indeed rear its head Wink

I found the current chaps grandfather on a family tree and sent a message to see if he could tell me anything.  He said the grandfather was in the navy so that explains how he ended up in Devon.

He doesn't think there is a link between our families and I don't think so either.

Earlier I found the current chaps brother has a company that renovates houses so that could well be how it came about.

I could send him a message but seems a bit cheeky to just say Hi can you tell me how you got this house please?  Embarassed

Hello

I don't think there is any connection between our Hinchliffe families but it was good of you to post thank you.
