Archaeology gripes

Mon Jan 06, 2014 12:09 pm by mckay1402

My main interests are ancient, classical and pre Roman British history. I am a big fan of Mesopotamian cultures and classical Greek cultures as well as Celtic and preceltic cultures in Britain.

One thing I find is that Archaeologists will assume that every find is for ritual or religious purposes. This really gets on my nerves when they are talking about Neolithic peoples for whom there is very little evidence to suggest what their religions or rituals involved.

I really like Francis Pryor but in his book Britain BC he describes a ceremony at Stone Henge which must be guess work at best. I find this extremely frustrating. I know the idea is to flesh out the finds but this conjecture is damaging in my opinion. It is shaped by the person who writes it rather than any real knowledge. Pryor is not the only one guilty of this but this was the most irritating example I could think of.
