Where can you?

View this National Burial Index thing?  I'm sure I used to be able to search it on a site that is no more but can't remember the name of the site or if it morphed into something else.

I have got someone else looking for George (yes still looking!) and am thinking the only way to eliminate a death is to go through this index.  

Would it give me ages so I could send for a certificate or is it like BMD and only gives ages after a certain date?

If I sent for every death certificate I would need to win the lottery first to pay for them and have already got a couple of wrong George's so really need to whittle the options.

I don't have the NBI, but I belong to Family Tree Forum (another free FH messageboard) and there's a couple of peeps there who seem happy to do look ups.
