Has anyone ever seen one or know anything about them?

I've never really thought about looking for any but imagine they would be quite interesting and it came up recently on WDYTYA which made me think.

I have a Charlotte born 1818 who had two boys John in 1841 and Lewis in 1849.
No fathers on birth certificates and she died 1857 without marrying.

John dies as a baby but Lewis marries and on the marriage certificate puts down a father Joseph who is an engine driver. Now I always thought this was a fabrication as Joseph has the same last name as Charlotte (Hinchliffe) but wasn't her husband. If he did exist I don't know who he was.

Any thoughts? sunny

I know it's about Suffolk, and your peeps are in a different neck of the woods, but presumably the principle is the same.

Thanks STG. I've had a few replies elsewhere but don't think there will be any records to find for my example.

Would seem the children were usually taken in by the mothers family and nothing was made public as it were.

I've already looked for "Joseph the engine driver" to see if he did exist but not for a while so might have another nose just in case.
But am pretty sure he was made up pirat
Funny enough the bride of Lewis had no fathers name either.
