1871 census in Grimsby. He 44 born Marton Moor Cheshire and wife Fanny 37 born Horncastle Lincs with children born New Hutton Lincs Joseph 10 and Harriett 9.

They only came to my attention because one of mine is lodging with them. This lodger is very elusive in 1861 so I am interested to see where this family was in 1861 but the name Speidell must be spelt wrong as no hints come up.

Any ideas what it might be please? I tried looking for the marriage but no luck.

Woah have just noticed he was an engine driver Shocked When Lewis got married he made up a father called Joseph who was an engine driver!! Coincidence?
Did he use this man as a father but change the surname to Hinchliffe when he got married or could this man actually be his real father - how exciting Basketball

Must find this Joseph to see if he was in Yorkshire around 1849.

Update have found Joseph, Fanny and baby Joseph in 1861 under Swindler at Barrow Upon Humber.

Kind of interesting his birthplace Newton Cheshire as that is where Lewis ended up.

Think have found birth of baby Joseph under Spindley but with the name changing all the time can't find anything else as yet.

Time for sustenance pig

Oh well done siamese thanks for all that.

I can find him now in 1841 under Swindels with lots of siblings but need to place him in Yorkshire at some point if he is to meet Charlotte and produce Lewis.

Pity it doesn't say son on the 1871 but that would be too easy!

Oh my goodness there is one in Yorkshire in 1851 which is the closest census to the birth Shocked

Living with brother Peter Swindell and wife Eliza. He isn't an engine driver at this point though (if I have the right one) but a labourer.

Living Brightside Bierlow - is that anywhere near Huddersfield? *

What do you reckon to him being the father? Or is it just coincidence he used his first name and occupation?

* Seems to be near Sheffield.

Found a marriage in Sheffield 1859 Joseph Swindells and Fanny Bust/Bast.

That maybe ties in with the couple of newphews under Burt.

Any railway records for Joseph Swindells?

1901 Grimsby widowed with married daughter Harriett Metcalf and grandchildren.

One of the grandchildren grows up to be a chocolate coverer what a great job Laughing

Her father was Lewis sooooooo surely that proves it Joseph the engine driver was his father and he knew he was his father and had a relationship with him how wonderful.

My word isn't it amazing what you can find out cheers

Thanks for those that must be for son Joseph who was born 1860.

Would be good to find Lewis in 1861 as never have. Now the Swindells connection has come to light I am wondering if he was squirrelled away with a relation of theirs maybe even grandparents?

He isn't with his other grandmother Sarah who had remarried by then and his mother had died in 1857.
