My Grandfather x 2 George Richards born 1829 Bristol. Wife Eliza Lewis born 1827 Bristol. Her parents were called George Lewis and Elizabeth Gordon.

On the 1851 George and Eliza with daughter Eliza born 1848 Bristol are living with another family in Cheltenham.

The names of the other family are Henry Lewis born 1828 Bristol, wife Mary born 1825 Hatherley Cheltenham and daughter Mary 1 day old. Both men are Cordwainers.

My first reaction was was Eliza and Henry brother and sister?

Up to now cannot find Henry Lewis on the 1841 census.

Any help would be appreciated

I've only just noticed this thread, so sorry for not responding before.

Is it that you have found the rest of them in 1841 and Henry is not with them, or that you can't find any of them in 1841?

Need to check the 1841 census again, which I will do to morrow at the library as I do not have access to the census.

Thanks

Oh, now I'm really confused.

Are we looking for Henry or Eliza?

So far I understand:

1827 - Eliza Lewis, d/o George Lewis and Elizabeth Gordon, b. Bristol.

1829 - George Richards, b. Bristol

1841 census - George Richards as a 10yo living in Bristol
1841 census - Eliza's whereabouts unknown

date/place unknown - George and Eliza marry.

1848 - baby Eliza born in Bristol

1851 - George, Eliza and baby Eliza are living in Cheltenham with a Henry Lewis, b. 1828, Henry's wife Mary, b. Hatherley 1825 and their 1 day old daughter Mary.

I've checked the IGI, but can't find a baptism for Henry 1825-1830.

I've also had a quick look in 1841 for Eliza and there are a few possibilties, but none that look quite right. So far:

- female servant in Minchinhampton
- in St James, Bristol City with Hannah 40, Thomas 20, and Joseph 8
- female servant in Rockhampton, Thornbury

I have an ancestor called Eliza and on one census she's down as Elizabeth, so I suppose that's a possibility for your Eliza too.

Do we know where George Lewis and Elizabeth (nee Gordon) are at any time, or are you not partic. interested in them?

So, am I doing the right thing by trying to :

a - find a likely Eliza in 1841
b - find Henry in 1841

please?

Yes I am interested in George Lewis and Elizabeth Gorden as they would be my Great Grandparents x 2 (never sure if it should be 2 or 3) But have never been able to find out much about the Lewis family.

There's a tree on Ancestry owned by "margaretdonnelly333"that has:

George Lewis, b. 23 June 1792, Castle Precincts, Bristol (no source for the info)
m. Elizabeth Gordon 5 Jan 1817 at St Augustine the Less, Bristol (from IGI)
d. 1873 Bedminster, Bristol, Q2, vol 5c, p.511

Father of George is Thomas, b. abt 1770 (no source info)

No information on Elizabeth Gordon, but the following children listed for the couple:

Ann, b. 1818 Bristol
George, b. 1820 Bristol, d.1897 Fulham
Elizabeth, b. 1821 Bristol
John, b. 1825 Bristol
Eliza, b. 1828 Bristol

There's no source for the birth info of these children, but a source for George's death. George was a tailor, and there's lots of info about his 7 children.

So, that's a start.

Margaret doesn't have George and Elizabeth on any census records, so off to see if I can find them now I have a dob etc.
STG

Edited to say - she knows that George is a cordwainer because she got the info from Eliza's marriage "lines"
