I am helping a fellow family history researcher with this family and we are stuck.

Emma Floxen born 1821 Bristol.  Married Robert Alexander in 1842.  Cannot find a record for this marriage. Robert was born in Glasgow in 1818.  After 1851 Robert seems to of disappeared, but must of died by 1861 as by han Emma is a widow.  Emma dies in 1897 in Bristol.

They had 4 children
Mary Ann born 1844
Margaret born 1846
Eliza orn 1848
Robert born 1850.
All born in Bristol.

In 1871 Emma is living with her 3 daughters in Halifax
In 1881 Emma is living on her own in Southport
In 1891 Emma is living with her widowed daughter Mary Ann Bailey in Lancashire.
In 1861 it looks like Mary Ann age 18 is lodging with the Standsfield family in Yorkshire, but where is the rest of the family?

Cannot find a marriage for Mary Ann to a Bailey, apart from one in 1874 in Hull to a William Baily. Have found a Mary Ann married to a William Bailey in the census but do not think its the Mary Ann I am looking for.

Any help would be appreciated.

Possible marriage for Eliza in Halifax Sep 1871 to Mitchell Heap or John Fielding Mellor.

Ditto for Margaret in Halifax Mar 1873 to James North or Richard Smithies.

All the girls were single and in Halifax in 1871.  Will check further after tea.

Onto Mary Ann there's a marriage in 1863 again Halifax to William Henry Haslam so she could have been widowed then married a Bailey.  Again father Robert an engineer and she is 19 so has to be her.

Marriage 1 Jun 1871 Halifax Mary Ann Haslam widow to William Bailey.  Father Robert Alexander engineer and witness Margaret Alexander.

Hi Tourmie

How can I thank you, you have come up trumps.   My computer was playing up yesterday when I went into ancestry to find the information found regarding Emma than crashed so did not get back to you.

Thanks again  and will do some more research this afternoon.

Hi siamese

It was a pleasure to work on after STG's problem family Laughing

It was lucky to find all the girls marriages on ancestry but still got young Robert to track down.

Robert Alexander marriage in Middlesex 20 July 1873.  Robert 23 engineer father Robert engineer so that fits.
Bride is Sarah Muir 19 father Daniel a boot maker.
Possible but not conclusive as can't find them on a census to see his birthplace.

1861 is a real black hole can't find any of the Alexander's.  Children would still be fairly young but had they moved up North by then or where.

Sarah Muir 17 and father Daniel the boot maker are in Middlesex in 1871.  I wondered if Robert was lodging there but no.

However in 1891 Daniel and wife Sarah have daughter Sarah living with them.  Sarah included as a Muir but a widow age 37 sooooooo Robert Alexander must have died and she went back to her parents?

Also a grandson age 21 but he's called John Brown so let's not go there and we'll assume for now he belongs to someone else!

1881 this could be Sarah Alexander 27 visiting

Alexander Muir 30 boot maker
Isabella Muir 26
William 6
Lilly 3
Allice

Sarah is down as married at this point.  Perhaps Roberts job as an engineer had taken him who knows where.

Not to sure about above as on the 1871 census Mary Ann's surname is still Alexander and classed as single.

Yes you're right there siamese that one doesn't quite add up but the 2 marriages we have for her both with father Robert Alexander leads to it being our girl.

Maybe the first marriage was short lived and she reverted back to Alexander in 1871?  Second marriage was after the census for that year so that's ok.

Further investigation required Cool

Further thought first marriage didn't work out rather than being cut short by death.  After all there would be no shame in putting herself down as a widow in 1871.  She remarries as a widow using first husbands name but was that the truth silent
