William Coole born 1806 Bristol. Married sometime before 1833 to Elizabeth ? They had 2 children sadly both died young, William age 2 and Maryann age 21. William died in 1868 (have death certificate) I have come accross a marriage in 1861 so wandering if William was married twice? to a Amelia Belding.

Marriages Sep 1861 (>99%)
COOLE
William
Clifton
6a
237

Before going to the expense of ordering a marriage certificate wandering if there is anyway I could find out. Do not have access to ancestry at present so unable to check the 1861 census.

Any help would be appreciated.

there is a tree on ancestry which has an Amelia balding marrying William cooke (coole) with that marriage referenced. that Amelia is a widow in 1871 according to census but she dies as Amelia cook and they have a child Amelia Florence (1864) who goes by the name of cook throughout her life etc.

the tree does have William as William cooke/coole and born 1806 Bristol to George coole and Hannah Milson and dying 1868.

Marriage to Amelia was after the 1861 census so Amelia is still Balding at that time.

Down as Aunt age 33 born Newbury. Residing in Clifton with William B head and Sarah mother surname Quorrington and 3 servants.

Marriage 7 September 1861 gives fathers name as John Cook.

Marital status of bride and groom both single.

That doesn't tie in with your William does it scratch

Her father Benjamin Balding. Sister Jane Balding marriage Clifton 1853 but I can't find Amelia marriage on ancestry to check.

Thanks Vron and Tourmie,

Sounds unlikely that William remarried as William would of been a widower.

On William's death certificate William's brother John is present at his death. Would not the wife Elizabeth/Eliza be present?

I have Eliza's death in 1871 but again could be wrong.

What was the address on the death certificate siamese?

Maybe he was visiting his brother when he passed away. We could check the address with the 1861 census for him and 1861/1871 for his brother to see if they matched.

Strafford St is where John was living in 1871. According to the death certificate William was living at Upper Unity St. Rather sad if his wife had died earlier as both his 2 children had died.

I made a mistake about Eliza's death it was 1877 not 1871. Just been looking at her probate and the address given is 4 Unity St (widow).

Wander where they were in 1861.

Right so Elizabeth is still around in 1871 as a widow and they are both lurking somewhere in 1861.

Maybe she was too distressed to sign the death certificate. Did it have to be next of kin or could anyone, family or not, do the necessary?

Could well be as William worked in a soap factory, when he died he was the manager. Although I have Eliza born Bristol either the cences was wrong or me

In 1851 Eliza is down as born in Bristol St Philips.

Soap factory cheers

In 1841 they are all born Glos so goodness knows where Devonshire came from!

All we need now is Eliza in 1871.

By some miracle I came across a post someone made with random names that didn't belong to them from the 1871 census Bristol and one was for address 5 Unity Street.
Names were William Jennings 23 and wife Sarah 21 so I looked them up and voila

4 Unity Street is Eliza Cooley Head Widow 66 Annuitant born Bristol St Phillips.

Toutmie,

That's great, thanks.

Do not think Eliza's maiden name will ever be known

Tourmie, Think its one of those brick walls one is never going to break down.

Thanks for trying to help, at least we know where Eliza was in 1871/51.
